Overview
A closer look at Djemila Roman Ruins
Djemila is located in the Wilaya of Setif in northeastern Algeria and was formerly known as Cuicul. It was established in the first century AD as a prosperous Roman settlement. The city follows a precise Roman layout despite its mountainous terrain. Djemila contains a Roman theater, a public square, temples, and old churches. The stone carvings depict scenes of daily Roman life. The Roman theater still hosts cultural events to this day. Djemila is a perfect example of Roman urban life outside Italy. Excavations have revealed its rich architecture and urban development. It is visited by many tourists and researchers interested in ancient history. Djemila was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982.
